Full searchable archive of the Yahoo SJ-24 group

Postby admin » Sat Feb 17, 2007 8:18 pm

I have just finished implementing the full archive of the Yahoo SJ-24 group with search option. The layout is not final and maybe changed later, if you have any comments please let me know.
The search supports boolean terms.

To access click SJ-24 Yahoo Group on the main page.

Just noticed that some newer messages posted with usage of Yahoo new "Rich-Text Editor (Beta)" option are not converted properly because of their nasty HTML format.
Will take a look how I can resolve it.

You might be able to create a new Yahoo group I.D. and set it up
to receive in text format.

Or setup your existing account to read in text format.

I think I get everything as simple text format.

If you don't want to read things in text format go ahead and
create a new account with another ID (you can use something
like SJ24NET to keep it simple and obvious).

You might have to create another yahoo I.D. to do it...
play around with it a bit and see if you can use the same
email for both, or maybe use another existing email address
like admin@sj24.net or something.

The search feature in Yahoo groups has improved some, but still
leaves much to be desired, so your search feature should be
quite useful.

You might go through the old posts and find out how free_scots_navy
(Cory Carpenter, owner of Brushfire) did his over at
http://www.fortitudine.com/~brushfire/y ... earch.html
or contact him for some feedback & collaboration.

Hi Mark,

new account will not work since the preference of html vs plain impacts email notifications only (I use direct retrieving from the Yahoo, not email, they will not email you almost 15000 messages).

The difference with the Cory Carpenter implementation is that I actually index my local copy the Yahoo group, not actual Yahoo site (I maybe wrong about how Cory doing it, just guess).

I have found a confirmation of the Yahoo HTML message format problem:
http://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/?17563
http://www.mail-archive.com/mhonarc-use ... 01312.html

It is not a big deal, I will fix it. The most important part that we can maintain the full archive of group and as result we can do whatever we want with it - better view options, search, no ads, etc. Even just as a backup option...

P.S. I have added the Cory Carpenter search page in the links.
